Meet the living descendants of the ancient pyramid builders,

and experience their rich culture, rooted in ancient traditions, and yet alive

with ever evolving innovations. The Maya have not disappeared.  They are alive,

well… and thriving in a rich culture preserved from their great temple building

ancestors of the past.  Their rich artistic traditions continue to evolve

into finer and finer expressions of exquisite art-forms.

 

  • Visit the Magdalena Mayan festival, join in on the celebrations and view the exquisite Magdalena textiles.

  • Visit the famous Sunday market at nearby villages of Zinacantan and Chamula.  And off course San Cristobal has its own colourful markets, which will be a real treat for sore eyes.

  • Visit a Mayan medicine museum and experience authentic Mayan healing ceremonies with Mayan shamans.

  • Learn new ways of seeing the world through the eyes of indigenous Maya artists, as you participate in art sessions with Tzotzil and Tzeltal Maya artists at an indigenous Art Gallery in San Cristobal.

  • Visit traditional artesans and weavers in nearby Mayan villages and learn about the complex symbolism found in their beautiful traditional textiles.

  • Enjoy lots of free time in the afternoons in the charming town of San Cristobal where you can choose to let your creative juices flow, or explore the funky art galleries, cafes and restaurants.

  • As a finale we visit the famous archaeological site of Palenque in the dense jungle, and learn about the ancient Maya, their exquisite art, their cosmology and how it’s embedded in their beautiful temples.

and as a result  will watch your own creativity blossom

TEMPLE OF INSCRIPTIONS

After our week in San Cristobal we head down into the lowland Jungle to visit the famous Palenque Ruins, home of the Great Lord Pacal and some of the most beautiful Mayan temples in existence.

After this you have the option to visit the Olmec Museum in Villahermosa, providing you don’t have morning flight.  We highly recommend leaving some time for this.
