Itinerary: ‘Living Maya’
ITINERARY
Dates: 22nd – 31th March (10 days)
DAY 1. Wednesday. 22nd March
You will be picked up from the Tuxtla airport and transferred to San Cristobal. Please try to arrive by 5pm so we are all sorted by dinner. If you are not able to arrive by 5 try arriving a day early. We will be happy to organise your accommodation for you.
DAY 2. Thursday. 23rd March
A lazy morning to get over jet lag, then a leisurely walking tour of San Cristobal centro. After lunch we visit Mayan I’lol (shaman) Fernando Hernandez who will perform a blessing and healing ceremony for us. Following this we visit a Maya Medicine Museum. Then you have the evening free to explore the city.
DAY 3. Friday. 24th March
The village of Magdalena is well known for its exquisite textiles, and today is its annual Festival, so we will head into town to join in on the festivities. This afternoon and evening you are free to continue exploring the town or simply relax at hotel.
DAY 4. Saturday. 25th March
This morning we learn about the traditional mask making at the nearby village of Chiapa de Corzo. Then after lunch we continue our art education as we head off to the indigenous Muy Art Galleria where a Mayan artist will run a special printmaking workshop for us. Evening is free to wander the streets of San Cristobal.
DAY 5. Sunday. 26th March
The Sunday market at nearby towns Chamula and Zinacantan are famous throughout the region…. and today is Sunday, so it off to the market! Both towns have very unique churches with their syncretism of ancient Mayan religion and Catholicism. Lunch will be provided.
DAY 6. Monday. 27th March
Today’s activities are still be to finalised. This evening we dine together at Na Bolom museum and hotel and enjoy a talk by archaeologist Partick Murphy who will tell us about the Zapatista uprising and the vital role his uncle played in the movement.
DAY 7. Tuesday. 28th March
Today is a free day to do as you please, work on your masterpieces or continute to explore the town. We are happy to advise you on various attractions in San Cristobal. Evening free.
DAY 8. Wednesday. 29th March
Today we head down into the lowlands of Chiapas where we will lunch at the beautiful Agua Azul waterfalls, then we continue on to Palenque. Evening is free to explore the city of Palenque.
DAY 9. Thursday. 30th March
Palenque ruins are undoubtedly one of the most beautiful Mayans ruins in the entire Mayan area. This morning you will have a guided tour of the ruins, then after lunch we head to the city of Villahermosa, a two hour bus ride. This evening we will have our farewell dinner at the hotel, and have a show and tell of our Mayan inspired masterpieces.
DAY 10. Friday. 31st March
This morning there is the option to visit the Olmec Museum park, La Venta on your own before departing.
